Overview

Mount Meru

Mount Meru offers one of the most rewarding and scenic trekking experiences in Tanzania, thanks to its dramatic landscapes and diverse ecological zones. Rising to 4,566 meters (14,980 feet), Mount Meru is the second-highest mountain in Tanzania and is often considered an excellent acclimatization climb for Mount Kilimanjaro.

The trek begins through lush montane forest, where hikers may encounter giraffes, buffaloes, warthogs, and colobus monkeys under the protection of armed park rangers. As the trail ascends, the forest gradually gives way to heath and moorland, characterized by open ridges, volcanic ash slopes, and expansive views of the Great Rift Valley. Higher up, trekkers experience an alpine desert environment, with cooler temperatures and dramatic volcanic formations near the summit.

One of Mount Meru’s highlights is the spectacular summit ridge walk, offering breathtaking sunrise views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Momella Lakes, and Arusha National Park far below. Compared to Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is less crowded, more wildlife-rich on the lower slopes, and technically engaging, making it ideal for adventure travelers seeking a quieter yet challenging climb.
